Life’s expectation

Road to nowhere

Life’s expectation can be roughly translated to three categories, as I have found in my own experiences.
  • Internal Expectations, which are the expectation of you and your blood relations.

A father may expect the son to become a lawyer. A mother may expect the son to marry the women of her choice. A brother may expect  his “big brotha” to lend him some money. ( My father expected me to become a civil engineer who was a doctor who should be doing business with a law degree! Clearly now you know why I am half crazy most of the time! )

And we have,

  • External Expectations, which are the expectation of the anything or anyone outside of your instant family.

A friend may expect you to become rich and help him later(!). The country’s expectation on you as a citizen of this country. A society’s expectation on you as the member of the society.

From first breath to the last, we face thousand and one expectation from ourselves and from all around us. Even on death bed you will face some expectation . Some might expect you to write down all your assets to them! :)

So how do we, as a normal human being thread a fine line between all these expectations and still not ending up in Tanjung Rambutan!* If I were to know the answer, I would now be the smartest person on planet :)

I think, the only we to get out of this crazy rat race expectation is to weed out the external expectation and stay focused on internal’s for internal expectation is far much important and for a certain extent “superior” than anything else.

Being a good son or daughter to your parents , a good brother to your siblings is the most important thing after all. Their expectation on you are most of the time for you own good. If we have achieved the internal expectation, that is satisfying our family members and our self, the other puzzles in the jigsaw of life, will fall in its place.

But of course ,life is not a set of mathematical problem to be solved with one formula only. There are thousands of formulas for our “life” problems, ie.expectations. The most important thing is, trying to satisfy the expectation as much as possible.Of course, many a times we will fail to meet the expectations.

Remember this always, life is always “in pursuit of happiness” for happiness is not a destination but the journey itself! We will try and fail many times, but trying again what makes us human after all.

The third expectation is, your expectation on others ( self expectation ), which crushes your heart most of the time. But , that is another story for another day.

* Tanjung Rambutan ,if you do not know, is famous for Hospital Bahagia, which is a mental rehabilitation hospital!.
